My Beliefs on Nursing
My journey to becoming a nurse has been a very long one. I was never very sick as a child but I always remember visiting the doctor for my check ups and getting all my vaccinations. My first hospital experience was getting my tonsils out and tubes in my ears and I remember eating lots of ice cream and jello and getting presents from family. My fonder memories as a child were receiving my sucker and my sticker on the way out of the office, they were always very kind and full of smiles. Growing up I wanted to become a Nurse but somehow I deviated away from that path, and in high school I decided to become a Lawyer. My life changed drastically in high school and many of my dreams were shattered and put on the back burner due to family circumstances. I ended up having children in my early 20`s and started working as a Law Clerk. I went back to college in 2001 to obtain my Diploma and in my last year which was 2003, tragedy struck and I was in a near fatal car accident. I went under a transport truck on highway 115 on my way to school and had to be cut out of my car with the jaws of life. I ended up in Peterborough Regional Health Center with multiple broken bones and a brain injury.
Over the next 3 years with the help of many hospitals , Surgeons , Nurses and Therapists; I learned how to walk again and went through speech therapy and survived the SARS heath crisis in the hospital. I then realized without the help of all of the wonderful staff and their caring and compassion which helped me hold it together in times of frustration, I would have not made it to my goal. I was told that I should have been drinking from a straw and in a wheel chair permanently.
I have great respect for all the nurses that helped me in my time of need. I was treated with dignity and respect and as a person. This experience brought me back to my roots to becoming a nurse. That is what brought me back to university at 40 years of age. This is what has helped me shape my beliefs on Nursing care and the profession itself. I reflected on the the time of my injury to retrieve what values and beliefs meant the most to me as a patient and as a person.
“philosophy is an attitude towards life and reality that evolves from each nurse’s belief” (Edwards, 1997, 1089).
My personal philosophy I believe, is to work in the nursing profession and to provide the best compassionate care with the highest level of standards and expertise required to make the individual your caring for feel comfortable comes from within your personal reflections and proficiency in nursing ethics and education. A solid foundation is based on the knowledge we learn through practice and experience to enable the nurse to provide a professional and genuine relationship with their clients.
As a nurse I will strive to provide the best care for my patients- physically, mentally and spiritually. I will guide them and their family through the stress and emotional turmoil that the illness has put them through from start to finish. I will educate my patients and their families and act as an advocate for my patients and return control of their care to their hands by knowing their choices and options and supporting their decisions. I will also support my colleagues and treat everyone with respect and understanding. To me Nurses are selfless and give their knowledge , skills and compassion to their patients and their community. Nurses become leaders, innovators and give assistance to those in need while helping their community and encourage others everyday to join their plight in healing.
In the next 6 months of my clinical placement I hope to set a strong foundation to base my personal reflections on and act upon my personal reflection of Nursing through practice and gaining a wealth of knowledge.

My personal philosophy and beliefs on Nursing has not changed from when I first started my portfolio. They may have broadened due to the clinical experiences that I have had the opportunity to experience. Through my placements in Maternity and Community Nursing my eyes have opened to the stigmas of homelessness, poverty, drug use, mental health issues as well as barriers to obtaining proper health care. I believe that through these issues Nurses are challenged to overcome barriers and stigmas to provide the best possible healthcare through therapeutic practice.
