My Nursing Values
My beliefs on Nursing care are shaped by my values that I cherish and follow throughout everday life whether it is in my personal or professional life. My values have developed over time from family lessons, life lessons as well as what I deem to be important to myself as an individual and in the way I conduct myself. Here are my values that I cherish and uphold in every aspect of my life, although I have many these are a few that are important to me at this point in my life.
KNOWLEDGE - “Any fool can know. The point is to understand.” ― Albert Einstein
To me knowledge is very important, I have always valued learning and always have taken steps to improve my education on many subjects. In everyday life if there is something I do not understand or know about, I research it to get a better understanding so I can see what the subject involves and is all about. I have always taught my children that anything can be accomplished as long as you put the effort in no matter what sex you are or what age. In Nursing knowlege is very important because Nursing is not just a job it is an occupation where you must continue to evolve and build on your skills. You must grow within your profession and continue learning within your scope of practice to better care for your patients.
CONFIDENTIALITY - “If I maintain my silence about my secret it is my prisoner...if I let it slip from my tongue, I am ITS prisoner.” ― Arthur Schopenhauer
I believe confidentiality should be honoured by all professionals and in personal situations to avoid embarrassment and hurt. I have had the opportunity in my life to be on the other end of the spectrum and have the confidentiality of my family breached after my uncle committed suicide. I had a neighbour tell me of the incident that was not in the paper and just told me in passing as she was the friend of someone who worked with the coroner. I told her that it was my uncle and put in a complaint. This was a personal and private matter to my family and I was hurt. I uphold my promise of confidentiality in my every day life and in my profession currently as a PSW. As a Nurse this is a very important value due to the sensitive nature of the information that you deal with on a daily basis. You never know who will overhear your conversation and who you may hurt or offend in the process.
SELF- RESPECT - Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work. ― Adrienne Rich
I really believe in my personal life that self respect and how you carry yourself is a reflection of how others will perceive you. I have always had controll over my own thoughts and actions and have shown my children that respect for yourself and using your critical reasoning skills everyday in how you conduct your behavior will reflect on how you will live throughout your lifetime. I am proud of the person I have become and the choices I have made in my lifetime. In Nursing this will guide me towards professional image in appearance and behavior.
HONESTY - Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters
” ― Albert Einstein
I am a firm beiever in honesty even if it makes me look bad. I am always truthful and think of consequences to lying. In my own life on two occassions in dealing with work situations I have found large sums of money and returned it to the rightful owner even though I would never of have gotten caught. Honesty in the nursing profession is an integral part of communication, as well as gaining the trusts of your coworkers and patients. Lying to benefit yourself will always put you in a compromising position in the end.
COMPASSION - The value of compassion cannot be over-emphasized. Anyone can criticize. It takes a true believer to be
compassionate. No greater burden can be borne by an individual than to know no one cares or understands.”
Arthur H. Stainback
I use compassion for others in my every breath. To me comassion is almost finding what it is like to live in someone else's skin. To understand and empathize with their situation, to show caring, to show understanding and to not show judgement. To me this is a great part in being a Nurse and to relate with those you are caring for and their families.
