Reflection of my second year First Semster
I had my placement this semester at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on the Maternity Ward. To be honest at the beginning I was not very interested in this type of field of nursing. As I continued in my placement I grew very fond of this area of Nursing. I witnessed my first C- section, I enjoyed being in the operating room and may consider this as a future specialization. I also had the opportunity to work in the CAPE unit for children and teens and realized how many children are in crisis and need the support of Nurses and Social workers to help them get on the right life path with positive goals and self image. I was also on the Birthing Unit and to to assist on a baby birth and participate in the post Birth experience. The emotion when watching a new life come in to the world was overwhelming and witnessing the joy of the family seeing their baby for the first time was very overpowering, I felt a lot of emotion and shed some tears. I also worked day to day on the Postpartum unit and had the opportunity to care for many wonderful moms and babies. I performed assessments on Mom and baby, Provided health teaching to new moms and their families, and performed Baby baths. I completed my Maturity placement in December 2013 and enjoyed the experience and gained valuable skills and knowledge from this placement.
"The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother never,A mother is something absolutely new! "~Rajneesh~
My second Placement was a community placement at Green Wood Coalition. This placement was very different from any placement I have done. We had to complete a community project, ours was writing a Grant Proposal to create a community activator role that would help women with mental health issues overcome barriers that prevent them from obtaining the proper medical treatments they require. Here is our Poster from our presentation based on that project. The community of Port Hope is very unique I have never experienced so much participation in helping those less fortunate. Every Wednesday they have a community dinner that is free of charge and open to all those who are less fortunate, either low income families or homeless to some extent. A huge delicious dinner is presented by volunteers and everyone sits down and eats together as a community. A Nurse practitioner is in attendance as well to see and speak with who ever needs medical attention or advice. Green Wood is a small organization that helps those less fortunate and homeless. Thursdays they offer art therapy classes and a food drop in where usually fresh fruit and vegetables and some dry goods are available to those in need. They also are in the process of creating a music therapy program and participate in growing a community garden in the early spring to help feed those in need. It is a wonderful program and I hope to continue on with Green Wood as time permits.
